The son of three-time Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet, Piquet Jr. competed for the Renault team in 2008 and 2009. From 2010 to 2014, he raced NASCAR, becoming the first Brazilian driver to win a national touring series event when he topped the podium at the Sargento 200 at Road America in 2012. He joined the rallycross ranks in 2013, with a select season of regular season and X Games competition in a Mitsubishi, before being signed to SH Racing driving the No. 7 Ford Fiesta ST. He is a regular podium contender in that series.
